Florida resident inpatient hospitalizations due to dental conditions and that were potentially avoidable, occurring at civilian, non-federal hospitals located in Florida, among people less than 65 years old. These conditions include but are not limited to teeth malformation, gingivitis and cavities. This indicator has been identified as an ambulatory care sensitive condition, a type of hospitalization that might have been avoided through access to high-quality outpatient care. Timely and effective ambulatory (outpatient) care can decrease hospitalizations by preventing the onset of an illness or condition, controlling an acute episode of an illness or managing a chronic disease or condition. High rates of Ambulatory Care Sensitive hospitalizations in a community may indicate a lack or failure of prevention efforts, a primary care resource shortage, poor performance of primary health care delivery systems or other factors that create barriers to timely and effective care. Ambulatory care sensitive conditions are helpful when assessing community health needs.
